How It Works

After installing and activating WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter plugin, you need Go to Dashboard >> WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter >> General Settings.

All you need to do is select operation mode, Select supported files extensions, Select supported directories and save all the changes. Now, set PNG and JPEG conversion options, choose conversion method and save all the changes. User can even perform bulk conversion for images.

General Settings

In general settings we have the following options:

1. Operation Mode

   You can choose between the following modes of operation:

   Varied image responses: The Varied image responses mode adds rules to the `.htaccess` which redirects jpegs and pngs to the corresponding webps (if they exist). The rules have a condition that makes sure they only trigger for browsers supports webp images.

   WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter plugin support jpg, png and jpeg file extensions. User can select all or few of them for conversion.

3. Supported directories:

   WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter plugin allow user to select files from plugins, thems, and uploads directries. Files from these directories will be supported in output formats. User can choose all content option to select files from all directries.

Conversion

There are two types of image compression that can occur with WebP.

• Lossy: files will be smaller, but the quality will be reduced.
• Lossless: files will maintain their quality but require a larger file size to do so.

WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter plugin provides two conversion options which are JPEG and PNG Conversion Option. In PNG and JPEG coversion option all you need to to is

JPEG Options

In JPEG Conversion Option you can

• Select encoding option, auto or Lossy.
• Set quality for Lossy. You can set fixed lossy quality or same as the jpeg.
• Set quality for Lossless. User can set 100% lossless and near lossless quality.

PNG Options

In PNG Conversion Option you can

• Select encoding option, auto or Lossy.
• Set quality for Lossy. You can set Alpha quality.
• Set quality for Lossless. User can set 100% lossless and near lossless quality.

Conversion Method

WebPio - WordPress WebP Converter plugin has a bunch of methods available for converting images: gd, cwebp, imagemagick, vips, graphicsmagick, ffmpeg, ewwww cloud converter, and Gmagick. Each method requires further configrations. User can select auto or a specific conversion method.

• gd (using the Gd PHP extension)
• cwebp (executing cwebp binary using an exec call)
• imagemagick (executing imagemagick binary using an exec call).
• vips (using Vips PHP extension)
• graphicsmagick (executing graphicsmagick binary using an exec call)
• ffmpeg (executing ffmpeg binary using an exec call)
• ewwww (using the ewww cloud converter (1 USD startup and then free webp conversion))
• Gmagick is a php extension to create, modify and obtain meta information of images using the GraphicsMagick API.

Bulk Conversion

In this tab, you will be able to convert all your website images with the click of a single button. Go to Bulk Conversion tab and click “Bulk Convert”. You can see the conversion progress down below on this button. It will show you all the conversions that have been made and actual and compressed size of the images. User can also remova images converted to webp format by click "Delete converted files" button

Extra Features

Here are the extra features of this plugin

• Automatic removal of WebP files larger than original: Enable this feature if you want to remove WebP image files which are larger than their original size.
• Enable cron to convert images uploaded to Media Library to speed up process of adding images (deactivate this option if images added to Media Library are not automatically converted)
• Log errors while converting to debug.log file (when debugging in WordPress is active)
